Centering her writing in current research findings and her own wide experience, Karissa Thacker offers us a wise and helpful guide for navigating the sometimes dangerous straits between being true to ourselves and our values and trying to achieve success for ourselves and our organizations. But, most important, through the exercises at the end of each chapter, she helps us determine what our values are, what makes us authentic.
I just finished reading The Art of the Authenticity and I thought it was outstanding for a number of reasons (1) it's accessible -- Dr. Thacker is clearly an intelligent and educated woman of science, but this book isn't filled with jargon and psychobabble. It's written in a straight forward, easy-to-read manner, without being overly simplistic; (2) it's useful for everyone -- You don't have to be a CEO or business person to appreciate and value the ideas about leadership presented in this book and want to implement them in your own life; (3) it's practical -- There are concrete examples of the concepts Dr. Thacker discusses in the book and exercises to help you practice what she is trying to teach; and, (4) it stays with you -- The book provides insights into leadership and authenticity that made me think about my own ideas and interactions long after I put it down.
Karissa Thacker speaks with wisdom and practicality. Through stories, scholarship and her own experience as an executive coach, she shows how leaders can be both authentic and effective. Being true to yourself makes you a better contributor, not only at work, but in every part of your life. This is a terrific book for both seasoned pros and people just starting to find their way as leaders. This book is on the gift list for some leaders I know and care about.
This thoughtful book does a nice job of presenting the need for mindfulness and candor with one's self as well as others to succeed at any level. It was a good read and thought provoking. I strongly recommend this book to younger readers who may need a guide in what appears to be a random world and to mid-career people looking for affirmation and some techniques to build their credibility.
I got goosebumps reading the first chapter on The Digital Era, and couldn't stop reading! I think the author has coined a term we will all begin to use , The Age of Transparency. I am an executive coach, and I will be giving copies to all my clients. The "practical workouts" at the end of each chapter are 20 minute assignments , very do-able. They also include a few assessments to take along the way.
Teaching authenticity is a challenge...it's complicated to help others understand that the benefits of leading authentically far outweigh the risks of being vulnerable or being seen as somehow different. Karissa Thacker's book is a godsend. I've already begun using a number of her perspectives and strategies in helping clients move toward an appreciation of how they can become more of who they are at their best and how they can lead from that place. Her experience speaks volumes and her own capacity to model this art form brings to mind some of the best leader models we have today Susan Cain, Amy Cuddy, Brene Brown, Kelly McGonigal.
This is my new favorite book on and for Leaders, and really for anyone who desires to show up really real in the world. There are many books on leadership, and since I've been doing this work for many many years, I sometimes find after the first few chapters that the ideas are not new, or that while I'm fascinated, I'm challenged to find the 'being' of an authentic leader. Karissa Thacker's book is all that and more. She shares both the being and doing of leadership in a way that I find is like having a conversation with her. And this is, in my experience, unique. I am an Executive Coach and have already started using this book with my clients. The book is very approachable. I recommend this book to ... well, everyone!
